Additional Description:This art quilt calls on one to imagine looking through a window to enjoy the brilliant colors of autumn. It also suggests the viewer is in a darkened interior space with shadows running diagonally across the floor. Bold colors create interest in contrast to the deep blue shades of the background . Slivers of silk and metallic copper squares add luminous color. The hand dyed nature of these fabrics create subtle changes in color throughout the work.
I saw the beautiful Japanese garden through the open doorway as shadows moved across the floor of my room. The blazing light on the maple leaves looked very welcoming.
Artist StatementHaving spent my first 15 years in Japan as a child of missionaries, I find myself drawn to images and art reflecting Japanese ideals.
My “Window” series is about interior and exterior, the safety of being unexposed or hidden and the risk of being exposed and vulnerable. My art is an exploration of my experience of trying to find a place of belonging.
I primarily use hand dyed or painted cottons, silks and nonwovens. Use of sheers, couching and color values give a sense of depth and texture.

I love to play the piano, and I love to travel, exploring new cultures, cities and food.
What I Find Beautiful
I love the ocean, the mountains and cityscapes. I especially love to see landscapes that have layers of depth.
My Favorite Memory
I love to sew and my favorite memory is my sense of achievement upon creating my first garment out of fabric: a simple gathered skirt which I proudly wore on many an occasion.
My Favorite Art Style
My favorite style of art is abstract landscapes. I like art that is not too well defined so that one can look at it and create a scenario of one's own.
