Additional Description:I combine my hand dyed and screen printed fabric with images of animals, plants, flowers and/or people in a fabric collage. I machine quilt with my own signature quilt designs, often using words, and sayings. I NEVER use computer created quilting patterns. Embellishment can include beads, hand embroidery and my handmade ceramic faces.
A woman sits at the window, watching nature unfold around her. She contemplates all living things – plants, animals, fish and birds. It is calming to feel part of the world and a part of life.
Artist StatementMy art gives viewers a way to know me, and to recognize my style and viewpoint. My work is about my family and experiences. I started a series on my relationship with nature – images of leaves and fish surrounding figures and faces. Making art helps me to understand my feelings while making something beautiful.

Art contains the stories of the artist and the viewer. I enjoy hearing people’s personal stories sparked by my work.

I use family photos and hand colored, printed, painted and dyed textiles to make fabric portraits. I try out different art methods to add distinct self-made designs, including raku and traditionally fired ceramic masks, photo-chemical processes (cyanoprint and Vandyke) to print my photos and drawings on fabric, dye removal and etching/burning a variety of materials.
I work with groups to make art and to support communities in need. I completed projects in the US, Bahamas, China and Kenya.
Artist BiographyI am an African American quilter with 30 years of art quilt making experience. I grew up in upstate New York, and attended college in New Hampshire. Prior to working full time as an artist, I worked for the US Foreign Service, went to law school, and practiced law. My husband and I have 2 sons and 2 granddaughters.

I made my first quilt when I was 7 years old, continuing thereafter to make several quilts each year. When I worked in the Foreign Service and in law, I made art at night and on weekends. Art has always been an important part of my life. I finally took the plunge in 2004 to work in art full time.
