Artist Statement & Biography
Having spent my first 15 years in Japan as a child of missionaries, I find myself drawn to images and art reflecting Japanese ideals.
My “Window” series is about interior and exterior, the safety of being unexposed or hidden and the risk of being exposed and vulnerable. My art is an exploration of my experience of trying to find a place of belonging.
I primarily use hand dyed or painted cottons, silks and nonwovens. Use of sheers, couching and color values give a sense of depth and texture.
Rachel Derstine is a fiber artist living in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania. Her works are featured in juried and invitational art shows throughout the country. Her art is installed in institutions including Epic Systems Corporation and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Her art quilts have won awards at American Quilter’s Society – Paducah and Albuquerque, Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza, Quilt Fest of New Jersey, and Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen Benchmark Award.

What I Love Doing
I love to play the piano, and I love to travel, exploring new cultures, cities and food.
What I Find Beautiful
I love the ocean, the mountains and cityscapes. I especially love to see landscapes that have layers of depth.
My Favorite Memory
I love to sew and my favorite memory is my sense of achievement upon creating my first garment out of fabric: a simple gathered skirt which I proudly wore on many an occasion.
My Favorite Art Style
My favorite style of art is abstract landscapes. I like art that is not too well defined so that one can look at it and create a scenario of one's own.
